Whats the best way to record Phone Calls on a regular telephone line and get the best recording quality?

What is the best way to record phone calls on a regular telephone line(not a VOIP line) to get the best recording quality? I have an answering machine that records incoming calls but I cant turn it off and on, on demand. Do any of the new answering machines have “on-demand recording” and do they have a USB port to transfer all recordings to a computer? Or would best way to do it be just to use a Voice Recorder with a USB port?
